By using CanScan AI, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. We may update this policy from time to time, and will notify you of significant changes.

User Accounts and Authentication

CanScan AI now offers optional user accounts to enhance your experience with features like community participation, cloud sync, and personalized analytics.

We use secure authentication providers (Google Sign-In and Apple Sign-In) to manage user accounts. When you create an account, we collect and store your email address and create a unique user identifier.

Information We Collect

Personal Information

When you create an account, we collect the following personal information:

  • Email address (from authentication provider)
  • Username (chosen during onboarding)
  • Province or territory location
  • Profile preferences and settings
  • Marketing communication preferences
  • Leaderboard participation preference

Activity and Usage Data

For authenticated users, we collect and store:

  • Scan history (barcodes, products, timestamps)
  • Community chat messages and interactions
  • AI-generated analysis results
  • Product images uploaded for analysis
  • Favorite products and saved searches
  • Subscription status and usage credits

Device and Technical Information

We automatically collect certain technical information to improve app functionality:

  • Device information (model, operating system version)
  • App version and configuration
  • Error logs and crash reports
  • Performance metrics and usage patterns

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information for the following purposes:

  • To provide core functionality including barcode scanning and Canadian product identification
  • To enable community features like chat and leaderboards
  • To sync your data across devices when logged in
  • To provide AI-powered image and product analysis
  • To send marketing communications (if you opted in)

Data Storage and Retention

Cloud Storage

User account data, scan history, and community interactions are stored securely in our cloud database (Supabase) with encryption at rest and in transit. This enables features like cross-device sync and community participation.

Local Device Storage

The following data is stored locally on your device:

  • Cached product information for offline use
  • App preferences and settings
  • Temporary scan data and images

Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time. Some anonymized aggregate data may be retained for analytics purposes.

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including encryption, secure authentication, and regular security audits. User passwords are never stored directly - authentication is handled by trusted providers (Google and Apple). All data transmission uses secure HTTPS protocols.

Public Information and Data Sharing

If you opt into analytics and leaderboard features, the following information may be publicly visible:

  • Your username
  • Your province/territory
  • Aggregate statistics (scan counts, badges, scan streaks)
  • Recent scan activity in the live activity feed (product name, brand, timestamp)
  • Product comments you post (up to 500 characters per comment)

Community chat messages are visible to other authenticated users. Product comments and activity feed data are visible to all app users. We never sell your personal information to third parties.

Your Rights and Controls

You have control over your data in the following ways:

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal data
  • Correction: Update or correct your information
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your account and data
  • Portability: Export your data in a standard format
  • Opt-out: Disable specific features or data collection
  • Marketing: Unsubscribe from marketing communications
  • Privacy Settings: Manage leaderboard and community visibility

Payment and Subscription Information

Premium subscriptions are processed through RevenueCat and the respective app stores (Apple App Store, Google Play Store). We do not directly store credit card or payment information.

We receive only transaction confirmations and subscription status from payment processors.

Third-Party Services

CanScan AI integrates with several third-party services:

Supabase

Our backend infrastructure provider for database, authentication, and real-time features.

Google Gemini AI

Used for AI-powered image analysis and product identification via Vertex AI. Images are processed according to Google's privacy policies.

RevenueCat

Manages subscription billing and payment processing.

Open Food Facts

Provides product information database. Queries are anonymous.

Google Services

Maps API for store locations, Custom Search for product information, and authentication services.

Sentry

Error tracking and performance monitoring. Only technical data is shared.

Marketing and Communications

If you opt in to marketing communications during onboarding or in settings, we may send you product updates, Canadian shopping tips, and feature announcements. You can unsubscribe at any time through the app settings or via the unsubscribe link in emails.

Camera Access

Camera access is required for barcode scanning and image analysis. Images are processed in real-time and only stored if you explicitly save them or use the AI analysis feature.

Location Information

We collect your province/territory during signup for regional analytics and leaderboards. When you enable CanScan Go with GPS tracking, we collect and store precise location data (GPS coordinates) with your scans to power the gamification features. This data is only collected with your explicit permission and can be disabled at any time in settings.

Children's Privacy

CanScan AI is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover such information has been provided, we will promptly delete it.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy periodically. Significant changes will be notified through the app or via email (for registered users). Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
